Project areas, locations

Within the scope of the CitellusLIFE programme, in addition to coordinating and synergizing European ground squirrel conservation efforts in the Pannonian Region, we will improve the current status of existing European ground squirrel colonies by expanding their habitat areas (e.g., by way of shrub removal), connecting existing colonies and establishing new ones (e.g., by means of relocations). We do all this while keeping in mind the ecological needs of European ground squirrels and the modern-day challenges they face.

In addition to the strong populations living in the Pannonian Region, we ensure the replenishment of ground squirrel populations by establishing outdoor “Ground Squirrel Gardens” and indoor breeding centres. We release young animals into carefully selected and prepared habitat patches, further increasing the number of viable colonies. In addition, we promote social acceptance of the European ground squirrel through awareness-raising campaigns.
